For 2010, the front wheel drive Volvo C30 is equipped with a 2.5 liter turbo charged engine in both the T5 2 door hatchback and the R Design 2 door hatchback models. The engine is a dual overhead cam (DOHC), inline, 5 cylinder engine with a maximum power rating of 227 hp at 5,000 rpm and a 236 foot pounds of torque delivered at a range of 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm. The engine enables the C30 to have a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds. The engine's bore is 83 mm and its stroke is 93.2 mm. The compression ratio is 9 to 1. The engine features variable valve timing and camshaft technology to make sure all twenty four valves are operating at their maximum efficiency. Multi point fuel injection improves the C30's performance as well as its fuel economy.

The C30 accelerates from 0 mph to 60 mph in just over 7 seconds; with its standard manual transmission (an optional automatic transmission is available at additional cost. The gas mileage delivered by the C30 is a composite 24 miles per gallon (mpg): 21 mpg in city environments and 29 mpg on the highway. The Volvo XC70 was also the very first vehicle from the car maker to venture into the crossover and sport utility vehicle class. However, compared to most crossover vehicles and SUVs at present, the very first Volvo XC70 seemed to be more similar to the Volvo V70 which was a wagon. Both engines are part of Volvo's SI6 (short-inline 6) family, launched in 2006. Granted, from an economy viewpoint, the V6 might appeal to the workaday individual, since it gets between 15 and 21 miles to the gallon depending on if you are pushing through stop and go traffic or sailing down the freeway, while the V8 option dings those figures for a mere 13 miles to the gallon in town and 19 on the highway (EPA). You could even eke out a little better mileage by switching to a strictly front wheel option, but the difference is really almost negligible. As a lover of cars with get up and go, go with the V8.
The 3.2 AWD Luxury adds 18-inch alloy wheels, blind spot information system, mass movement sensor, level sensor, active headlights, power sunroof, heated leather seats, power passenger seat, wood steering wheel, wood accents, rain-sensing wipers, rear headphone outlets, and rear parking assist. As for power, reviewers say the S40’s engine isn’t impressive when compared to the Volkswagen GTI or BMW 1-Series. Volvo made a wise choice, however, by making the five-cylinder turbocharged engine and Geartronic automatic transmission standard.

The 2011 Volvo S40 is generally satisfactory. It built on a longer wheelbase and the option groups have been simplified, also available are two engines.

Consumers looking for comfort over handling, though, will want to take a look at the C30. "The C30's longish wheelbase for a coupe made it a much better highway cruiser than canyon carver," notes CNET.What might be the C30’s biggest drawback is its price. The base C30’s starting price is more expensive than many of its class competitors and its price increases quickly with options.

For 2011, the C30’s interior remains relatively unchanged, but reviewers are pleased with what Kelley Blue Book calls “a Swedish-modern sense of understatement.” Rear passengers will find comfort in individual bucket seats, a feature that differs from most compact hatchbacks’ bench-style back seat
