Presenters Jeremy Mansfield, Sam Cowen, Darren "Whackhead" Simpson, Bongani Nxumalo, Paul Rotherham and Graeme Joffe invited 94 listeners to join them as they watched the sun rise over the spectacular new stadium. The Aveng Group, who built the stadium, sponsored the broadcast and Aveng representatives were on hand to answer any questions about Soccer City.
"As this is the venue that will host both the opening and closing ceremonies we wanted to incorporate all the countries participating in the event," said 94.7 Highveld Stereo station manager, Ravi Naidoo. "As always, we also wanted to involve our listeners so we decided to paint 32 of our listeners in the flags of the 32 nations that will be taking part.
The models arrived at 3am to be painted by students from Success International Health and Skincare Training Academy. They patiently stood for four hours as the colours, crests and emblems of the various countries came to life on their bodies.
At 07h20 the unusual body paint flag parade marched around the perimeter of the pitch, followed by a rowdy group of supporters blowing on vuvuzelas and cheering them on.
"This was just one of the ways we will be building hype around the World Cup," added Naidoo.
